I am an artist based in Portland, Oregon. I also spend the winter in Aptos, California, home to my Grandfather and many generations past. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and moved to Portland for my first job, and I have been here ever since.
I am primarily an oil painter, although I enjoy printmaking and collage. I love the natural world, and I hope it shows in my work.
I had a career in medicine for my working life, but now I am working as a full time artist.
I learned to draw and paint in high school, and attended the San Francisco Art Institute for one year as an extension student. I learned that I was not brave enough yet to take this path. Also I did not smoke or stay up late. Now I am much braver!
I studied printmaking from Pat Pfeffer (Chouinard/CalArts)) in San Diego, and my friend Marilyn Maricle (PNCA) . I also credit Frank Janzen (Tamarind) for my technique, which I learned at Crow’s Shadow in Pendleton, Oregon.
I learned oil painting at PNCA in Portland, and have many people to thank for that. Currently I study at the Oregon Society of Artists, and paint with Alla Prima Portland Plein Air Group.
I learned collage from Dayna Collins (Salem, Oregon) who I find endlessly inspiring.
My most important lesson: take your art seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously.
